Title

What is a private key and recovery seed phrase?

A private key is a cryptographic key which basically is a long string of 0's and 1's. The private key is created by a software or hardware wallet (we recommend using a hardware wallet). It's also stored on the device where it's created on.

Your private key is the key to all your crypto receiving addresses (public keys). It's essential to backup the private key in case your (hardware) wallet gets lost or broken.

As a human you generally won't get to see the private key itself since it's hard to read, note down and remember. Instead you will get to see the recovery seed phrase. These are 12, 18 or 24 words which are easily readable and writable. You can use the recovery seed phrase to restore the private key and therefore the access to your crypto funds.

The SOLIDHODL enables you to punch these words down into stainless steel. This way you can protect it for life.

What is BIP39?

BIP39 stands for 'Bitcoin Improvement Protocol 39' which enabled the possibility of translating a private key into 12, 18 or 24 words. These words come from the 'BIP39 word list' which contains of 2048 words.

Why only 4 letters per column/word?

The first four letters of each word in a recovery seed phrase (which comes from the BIP39 word list) has unique first four letters. You only need the first four letters of each word to restore a private key.

For example the word 'comfort' is a word from the BIP39 word list. The first four letters are 'comf'. This means there is no other word in the BIP39 word list that also starts with 'comf'.

What is the difference between the SINGLE, DOUBLE and TRIPLE?

The basis containments of a SINGLE, DOUBLE or TRIPLE are all the same. The only differences are the amounts of stainless steel SOLIDHODL plates:

  • Single: 1 plate
  • Double: 2 plates
  • Triple: 3 plates

When calculating the costs per recorded recovery seed you save 38 euro's by purchasing a Triple. Also the outer box has small printing differences.

What is the 'NAME' section for?

The use of the 'NAME' section is optional and is very useful when you more than one wallet. You can find the name section at the end of the plate on the front- and backside. In total you have space for eight characters to name your SOLIDHODL plate for administrative purposes.

For example the name of your son or daughter your saving up for in a certain wallet or the brand or product name of a certain wallet so you know where it belongs to.

Can I use the SOLIDHODL with a 12-word recovery seed as well?

Yes you can. An recovery seed phrase can be 12, 18 or 28 words and a SOLIDHODL can be used for all of them since a SOLIDHODL holds up to 24 words. When you have a 12-word seed you keep column #13 to #24 empty and when you have 18-word seed you keep column #19 to #24 empty.

If you have two seeds of 12 words you can even consider putting them both on one SOLIDHODL plate but we don't advise to do so necessarily.

Can I use the SOLIDHODL with my software or hardware wallet?

You can use the SOLIDHODL with all software and hardware wallets. When you have a recovery seed phrase of 12, 18 or 24 words it fits on a SOLIDHODL.
